Today, we had the privilege of having Cara Gille Hernandez come to MOPS to share with us about Teen Parents Lincoln. This organization’s mission is to seek out and build relationships with teens that are pregnant and/or parenting, for the purpose of sharing God’s love for them, and helping them transition into mature, healthy parents and adults. That is a tall order, considering the abundant challenges that teens face when they are faced with pregnancy and parenting. Every other Tuesday night, Teen Parents holds a large group meeting open to both teen moms and dads. It provides mentoring for participants and teaches in classrooms at Lincoln High and North Star high schools.
Cara introduced us to one of the moms who attends Teen Parents, Christina. Cara interviewed Christina, who had her first child at the age of 16 and has faced a life time of hardship, which has resulted in a series of personal choices – good and bad. Christina was open, honest, and vulnerable in sharing with us what her life is like as young, single mom of with 3 small children at home. Christina’s story was both heart-breaking and eye-opening. As mothers of preschoolers, we all know how life changes dramatically when you have a child. I cannot even imagine how much more difficult that is when it happens during the teen years.
Cara shared ways that we can support Teen Parents Lincoln. First we can pray. Pray for Christina and teen parents like her in Lincoln. Cara also provided a handout with a variety of tangible ways to help, including donating new or used baby items like diapers, car seats, and strollers.
